Seeing Nature as the expression of Spirit; Sacredness coming as we experience Nature in deeper ways; What is spirituality, and how does it relate to the four elements of Nature and the mysteries of Nature; mystic purpose; ancient spiritual traditions and their connections to Nature
Have you ever had that somewhat romantic notion that Nature had a spiritual dimension—and that your life would be more joyous, inspired and positive if you could sense that spiritual dimension more?
In the previous section, “Health and Prosperity”, we saw how Nature allows Spirit to become physically real. And that hidden in Nature's four elements lay a set of four spiritual principles—needed for a physical Creation. In this section of the website we will learn how these four primal (and hence, spiritual) principles can be best understood and appreciated as “the four elements of Nature". These four elements of Nature were looked to by our ancestors for thousands of years as a source of great spiritual insight.
Still these four elements are sometimes part of our spiritual lives today—from the flame of a church candle to the water of baptism and the Jewish mikva bath; there is the breath of the holy spirit and the loud, urgent, airy blows of the shofar; and too, there is that spiritual act of kneeling to “ground” ourselves in prayer.
It will not be too long before we see a variety of other ways to draw the power of these principles into ourselves. As we do we’ll feel life and ourselves in a deeper manner. And importantly, we will find new ways to renew our selves—body, mind and spirit-wise, which translates as increased physical health, mental vibrancy, and spiritual enlightenment.
It will all come as you begin to see how Nature's elements relate to and even transmit spiritual principles to us.
The modern world unfortunately dissuades us from having this spiritual sensibility. Our fast paced, hurried, modern lives push us to ignore, even forsake, the primitive power of Nature. It may be a fair statement to make that we would all gain something if we were to find ways to renew the sacred bonds we have with this particularly vibrant dimension of Creation we all call, “Nature”.
As four element holism says, the most effective, quickest way of realizing the majestic spirit of Nature, is by appreciating its foundational parts. These part have been perceived, since the most ancient of times, as Nature’s four elements. These four elements—fire, air, water, and earth—compose the four sides of what can arguably be called Creation’s “Rosetta Stone”. More than the Rosetta Stone of the archeologist being essential for revealing to them the heretofore hidden elements that composed the hieroglyphics of the Egyptians, the four elements of Nature are here to reveal to us Creation’s foursome of spiritual principles that have combined to create this amazing world we live in.
It might seem doubtful that four such “elements” or “principles” could be responsible for this amazing Creation. According to four element holism, the proof is in the pudding—is there is any evidence for a set of four things being able to accomplish such a task? And the clear answer is yes. If we look at a microcosm of Creation—our planet—we’ll realize that from the ancient amoeba at life’s beginning to dinosaurs, to the bark and acorns of oak trees,to the eyeballs, stomachs and fingernails of our own human body, the physical shape and substance of life has been molded into existence by a single group of four genetic bases. These “but four” genetic bases are theorized by Holistic Natural Philosophy to be the expression of these same four spiritual principles.
As we understand these “but four” elements of Nature we will gain an awareness of a group of four primal spiritual principles which underlie deeper realities of our life. These deeper realities play out in the forces that interact to build our health, sustain our mental vitality, and give us our purpose in the scheme of things.
A key point in Holistic Natural Philosophy is that in our search for spiritual affirmation and purpose in life, it is possibly Nature that can best help us to feel these things. Each of the four elements speaks of, strengthens Creation by way of, and even translates to us one of the four fundamental, even bedrock principles which our spirit and body needs for health, prosperity and all else. Ultimately Spirit is Oneness, Nature is the expression of that Oneness, in four parts.
It is not hard to appreciate the way ancient humankind regarded these powers of Nature—from light and warmth, to thunderous skies, to rain, to mountains. They are in most every religious tradition. Indeed you will find them in the opening chapters of Genesis.
Unfortunately, today we have lost much of our primitive sensibilities toward these natural elements. Because our lives are lived inside so much of our time, it is not uncommon for us each to have little in the way of a deep connection to any of them. As our modern life cushions us from having to feel the everyday power of these elements, it also keeps us from drawing into ourselves the energies we need to stay healthy, vibrant, positive and purposeful.
As you will see, while there is a spiritual essence to each of these elements, there is also a romance and power to them. Each element and its principle comes in stepwise order as the first four numbers are uttered into being in the first four moments of Creation.
In order to really appreciate these four elements as the physical expression of what might be called the first four spiritual principles, it’s very valuable to get a quick lesson in what we call “Holistic Natural Philosophy”. It will show you that these four elements arose as a pre-Creation (~pre-Big Bang) Oneness found its way to make a very physical Creation.
